About Me
Farris graduated from Texas Tech University with a BS in Agricultural Education in 1970 and a Master of Education with honors in 1971.He taught Vocational Agriculture in Dimmitt, Texas, 1971-1975. He then worked for the Texas A&M Agri Life Extension Service for 28 years in Lamb and Dawson Counties, retiring in 2003. He holds the title of County Extension Agent Emeritus.
During his Extension career Farris was recognized numerous times by the Texas A&M Agri Life Extension Service for his educational programs and leadership to agriculture. Farris was recognized by Plains Cotton Grower and Lamesa Cotton Growers for his leadership to the cotton industry. Farris was the first recipient of the “Cotton Extension Education Award” presented by the National Cotton Council for his contributions to the United States Cotton Industry. He was instrumental in establishing the Agricultural Complex for Advanced Research and Extension Systems (Ag-Cares), a 240-acre farm in Dawson County. It is still in operation today providing producers across the Cotton Belt with research-based information to help sustain their farming operations.
He has been very active in the Lamesa community and the First Methodist Church during his 42 years in Lamesa. He served as Mayor of the City of Lamesa from 2004-2007, past Chairman of the Lamesa Area Chamber of Commerce, past Vice-President of the Lamesa Economic Development Corporation and the Lamesa Economic Alliance Project (Leap) and past Chairman of the administrative Board at First Methodist Church.
He presently serves as Finance Director of the First Methodist Church Lamesa, Chairman of the Dawson County Central Appraisal District Board of Directors and Manager of the Lamesa Municipal Airport (KLUV). He is member of the National Association of Realtors and the Texas Association of Realtors.
John and his wife LaNelle of 56 years have a son, Chad, and daughter, Julie and three grandchildren.
