Think you can spot cyber fraud? Think again

Scam emails used to be so obvious. Unfortunately, criminals have gotten more sophisticated, and their methods harder to spot. Instead of trying to trick you, they’re impersonating you in communications with your clients.

The scammers hack into your email and study your style of writing—salutations you use, phrases you repeat—then send messages posing as you to disrupt transactions. For example, they email the title company with wiring instructions to a fraudulent bank account.

Last week, the Texas Association of REALTORS® hosted a webinar featuring several experts who offered tips on protecting your business from cyber fraud. Below are a few takeaways from that session. You can download the slides or watch a recording of the webinar.

How to stop scammers from using your email to commit fraud:

  • Avoid sending sensitive information, such as wiring instructions, via email.
  • Inform all parties at the start of a transaction that you’ll never send sensitive instructions via email.
  • Regularly check your junk and spam folders for replies to messages you didn’t send.
