Mark McKinnon tells Texas REALTORS® how to win
Political insider Mark McKinnon, who’s contributed to Netflix’s House of Cards and produces Showtime political documentary The Circus, shared with Texas REALTORS® at the Governmental Affairs Forum the secrets of a winning campaign. Through famous ads and ones he’s had a hand in, McKinnon illustrated the story arc and elements that go into effective messaging.
Is Texas in play this election?
The Texas Tribune Executive Editor Ross Ramsey moderated a discussion between Texas GOP Chairman Tom Mechler and Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa to kick off the Governmental Affairs Forum. Mechler and Hinojosa went back and forth over their respective presidential candidates, which state party has the strongest appeal to minority voters, and whether the dynamics of the upcoming presidential election could put Texas in play.
Real estate data and MLS consolidation
The Technology/MLS Committee Forum covered platforms to make entering and sharing listing data easier, regional MLS efforts, and consolidation. The CEO of real estate data platform Upstream, Alex Lange, and Cary Sylvester, a member of Upstream’s board of directors, spoke about the company’s approach to listing data entry and distribution—stressing that their platform preserves local MLS specificity and maintains brokerage control of data. A panel of local executives and MLS directors in Texas discussed their views on platforms like Upstream and how they share their own MLS data with exchanges, other services, and portals. While there was some agreement that MLS consolidation could be an improvement in some markets, there was less consensus about whether efforts to establish regional MLSs would facilitate consolidation or preserve smaller MLSs. Texas REALTORS® in the audience also voiced concerns about how a regional MLS would retain the specificity local markets need.
The free Trade Expo runs until 6 p.m. today at the Texas REALTORS® Convention in Galveston, and the event wraps up tomorrow with the Board of Directors Meeting and more CE classes.
