5 ways to stop graffiti

If you’re a property manager or a commercial broker, chances are one of your buildings has become the canvas for a graffiti vandal. Lower the likelihood of another attack with these simple tips.

Light the way. Taggers typically don’t want to be seen making their illicit art. Add more lighting around the property, especially in secluded areas. Consider motion lights, which may grab the attention of neighbors and passersby when the lights get activated.

Use dark paint ... A bright-white wall makes for a great blank background for graffiti. Unless the tagger has access to the best contrasting colors, a dark background makes it less likely the graffiti will stand out.

… And keep some in storage. You’ll be able to act quickly to cover up graffiti.

Set up obstacles. Plant shrubs and bushes in front of walls or fences to make them less accessible. Rough surfaces or chain-link and lattice fencing are also more difficult to paint on.

Don’t forget the windows. Glass can also be a target for graffiti, and not necessarily by paint only. Some etch graffiti into glass with acid or sharp objects. Apply film to glass surfaces to help protect them from harm.
