5 unwritten Facebook rules that show off your social savvy

Social media channels don’t come with user manuals, so it may take some trial and error to learn what works to engage with followers and grow your online presence. Or you can just use these best practices to get it right the first time.
Responsiveness is key. Answer Facebook messages as soon as possible, ideally within a few minutes but definitely the same day. It’s great customer service, and Facebook even rates your business page’s response time based on how soon you reply to messages. If you respond quickly by Facebook’s standards, your page will display a “Very responsive to messages” badge.
Take time to tag. When you post about a business or organization, tag them in your post. (Type the “@” symbol, followed by their name.) They’ll see that you tagged them, and your followers can click their name to visit their Facebook pages. This allows you to give credit if you’re sharing someone else’s content and helps you expand your reach.
Keep it short. If you have a lot to say, consider keeping a blog. Then you can publish links to your blog posts on Facebook and use brief teaser text to entice readers, instead of overwhelming their feeds with paragraphs.
Consider the timing. Facebook Business Pages come with an Insights dashboard that tells you several data points about your posts and your followers, including when they are most active on your page. Check it out and be sure to post content during peak times, not during the early morning, for example, when people are least likely to see it.
When it doubt, stay out of it. Of course you want to connect with followers on a personal level, sharing birthday greetings and congratulations on life events. But always remember that you are sharing the internet with millions of people who may not share your opinions … and it only takes one second for someone to screenshot a regrettable comment before you delete it.
