Census shows more moving to Texas
Texas grew by more than two million residents, nearly 10%, in the last five years, reaching a total population of 22.9 million. Between the April 2000 and July 2005 census, 20 Texas counties accounted for 85% of the state’s population growth. And Texas’ low housing prices continue to make it an attractive relocation destination, with domestic migration and international immigration surpassing natural increases in population. The state’s fastest-growing counties from 2000-2005 were Harris (Houston area), which increased its population by 292,000; Tarrant (Fort Worth area), which grew by more than 174,000; and Collin (north of Dallas), growing by nearly 168,000 residents. In general, Texas’ urban and suburban counties are outpacing rural counties in population growth.
