REAL TipS: BUYING

Tips for buying a new home

Buying a newly built home has many advantages, which include, in most cases, greater energy efficiency and easier maintenance. One big perk is that new construction can be designed just for you. You can typically customize things such as color schemes, flooring, kitchen cabinets, appliances, TV and phone wiring, and more.

If you are considering purchasing new construction, search out a reputable builder. Ask friends, relatives, co-workers, and your Texas REALTOR® for recommendations. If you’re looking in a subdivision, ask people already in the development about their experience with the builder, and ask to look at their homes. If the house you’re looking at is already under construction, check out the quality of workmanship and materials being used in the early stages, such as during the pouring of the foundation and framing.

Finally, don’t get fooled into thinking you can buy a home at the builder’s starting price. Typically, these homes are bare bones with little, if any, options or amenities.
